The Italian healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, brought down by a chronic lack of resources and an inability to value its own professionals. The 2022-2024 Healthcare Contract, if not revised, risks being yet another missed opportunity to reverse course.
Starvation wages, unsustainable workloads, staff shortages: the reality for Italian healthcare workers is dramatic. There is a shortage of 100,000 nurses, 8,400 midwives, and thousands of healthcare assistants, silent heroes who fight every day for the health of us all, are shamefully underpaid, forced into grueling shifts, and face staff shortages that put the quality of care at risk.
The average salary increase promised by ARAN (6.32%) is little compared to inflation at 5.9%. In fact, our professionals will see their purchasing power decrease, while their commitment and dedication continue to be undervalued.
It's time to reverse course! The Government must show that it cares about the health of citizens and the future of the healthcare system. Investing in healthcare personnel is not only a moral duty, but also an unavoidable necessity to guarantee a quality healthcare service for everyone.
This is a war we cannot lose. The health of citizens is a precious asset that must be protected at all costs. The Government, unlike previous ones, must show the will to win this battle.
If the Government really cares about the health of the country, it must act now. It must make healthcare professions attractive, investing real resources to improve working conditions and salaries.
We can't wait any longer.
Previous governments have failed, now is the time to change course. The future of our healthcare system depends on this.
We invite the Government to take the following measures:
• Allocation of dedicated resources for healthcare personnel
• Improvement of working conditions
• Increase in salaries
• Recognition and enhancement of healthcare professions
Only with a concrete commitment from the Government can we save our healthcare system and guarantee the health of all citizens.
Let us remember that the recent Remote Study (click here), states that Italy is last in Europe for quality of life/work, especially in the healthcare sector: a disheartening fact that highlights our country's inability to attract and retain the best talents. Our professionals flee abroad in search of more dignified working conditions and pay, leaving us with an increasingly fragile healthcare system.
As citizens and as professionals, we cannot remain inert! We must support the rightful demands of Nursing Up and put pressure on politicians to find an adequate solution. Health is a fundamental right, and those who protect it deserve respect and concrete recognition of their value.
If you want the NHS to return to being the best in the world, join and support Nursing Up, for a fair and dignified healthcare contract!
