The healthcare situation in Emilia Romagna is now on the verge of collapse. Nurses, OSS, and health professionals throughout the region report a dramatic reality: there are no shift changes, staff are exhausted, and management's handling is simply unacceptable. Our managers, instead of asking the region for more staff, demand free, voluntary, and unpaid on-call availability from us. This is the shame of a management class that is abandoning its workers! The reality is plain for all to see: hospitals at risk, quality of care in free fall. It is no coincidence that Italy is among the top countries in Europe for antibiotic resistance and hospital infections, with very high associated costs. Yet, the political class continues to ignore the seriousness of the situation, preferring to invest in armaments rather than in the health of its citizens. Healthcare staff, exhausted by grueling shifts, are fleeing. Resignations are increasing, and the risk of errors—with all the terrible consequences—grows in direct proportion to fatigue and lack of rest. An Unjust Sacrifice and Never Recognized. Nurses, midwives, and OSS find themselves working for salaries that do not even reach those of a laborer, facing enormous risks and responsibilities, sacrificing nights, holidays, rest days, and vacations. They are forced to live far from their families, deprived of the right to their private lives, without any recognition from politics, management, and unfortunately, not even from the unions. Occupational illness is not recognized, allowances are ridiculous, and unlike doctors, we are denied the exclusivity allowance and private practice. In the Bologna area, where the exodus of colleagues is now a scourge, we see the five-year block and the requirement of unconditional fitness, while at the same time, there are complaints about staff shortages. Politics, distracted and detached from the reality of our work, continues to make promises and squander resources without considering that our healthcare system is collapsing under the weight of indifference and mismanagement. Dear colleagues and citizens, the Time to Act is Now. Change is possible, but it depends on us. Nursing Up Emilia Romagna makes an appeal, especially to all colleagues: it is time to stand together! Let us unite, without dispersing our energies, in a strong and determined category union, capable of fighting for our rights and our future. The traditional union system has failed: year after year, promise after promise, but our salaries have decreased while responsibilities have increased. And with the arrival of the nurse assistant, the situation risks getting even worse, with the serious danger of further lowering the quality of care. Politics and healthcare management do not want to listen to us, they are not interested in making our profession attractive. They are more inclined to seek useless and expensive solutions. But now, it is time for a real union turning point. And this turning point depends only on you, colleague. For too long we have seen the old union system fail. The situation has degenerated and is reaching the limit of civility. It is time to take example from other sectors, such as doctors and psychologists who join only category unions. Only united can we achieve those goals that no one dares to publish: Salaries aligned with the OECD average Exclusivity allowance or elimination of the exclusivity constraint (as for doctors) Recognition of the profession as strenuous Freedom of mobility Recognition of qualifications and meritocracy, with career opportunities and adequate compensation Recognition of the role of public official Paid internship 2025 must be the year of the turning point, the year in which we stop the free fall of the national and regional healthcare system in Emilia Romagna. It is time to act! Colleagues, let us run for RSU, support each other in the upcoming elections, or become activists for change. There is no more time to lose. Only united can we truly change healthcare. No one will do it in our place. Let’s do it for ourselves, for our families, for a better National Health Service, and for all citizens.
