Without doctors and nurses, the health of Italians is at risk. Doctors and nurses, the pillars of our healthcare system, are leaving Italy. In the last twenty years, almost 180,000 healthcare professionals have left Italy. A hemorrhage that has a very high economic and social cost. Training a doctor costs the State about 150,000 euros, while training a nurse costs about 22,500 euros. We are losing a wealth of skills and investments. In recent years, Italy has invested over 3.5 billion euros in training healthcare professionals who now enrich other countries. Between 2011 and 2021, Italy closed 125 hospitals, and the need for nurses is set to double in the coming years. The government proposes ineffective solutions and seeks nurses from abroad, ignoring the root problem: inadequate pay and unsustainable working conditions. While in much of Europe nurses' salaries range between 2,500 and 9,000 euros per month, in Italy wages are well below average. High rents, rising bills, healthcare expenses, and reduced purchasing power make the lives of Italian nurses increasingly difficult. Many are forced to give up life projects such as starting a family or moving due to salaries that do not cover the cost of living. A recent survey by Nursing Up Emilia Romagna revealed that 98.2% of nurses are dissatisfied with their salary and only 8% report working in a non toxic environment. Work overload, grueling shifts, and the risk of burnout are now a daily reality, aggravated by the lack of psychological support. The shortage of healthcare personnel has serious repercussions on the quality of care: Longer waiting lists Closure of departments and services Decrease in the quality of care with an increase in infections and hospital deaths Increased risk of medical errors Politics can reverse this trend, the money is there, here’s how to reverse the exodus: - Financially support our students away from home - Give 51% of union power to a single union, so as to transform Italian healthcare and restore it to the prestige it deserves. Doctors and psychologists rely on category unions and have achieved much more in terms of rights and economic recognition. Now it’s our turn. We cannot afford to be left behind. Join Nursing Up.
