Italy, the homeland of the Renaissance and humanism, today humiliates its guardian angels.

Nurses, the undisputed heroes of the pandemic, are forced to survive on starvation wages, well below the European average. While in much of Europe a nurse earns between 2,500 and 9,000 euros per month, in Italy the average salary is much lower, making a dignified life impossible, especially in large cities.

Rent that absorbs most of the salary, ever-increasing bills, medical expenses, dentist and for children: this is the daily life of thousands of Italian nurses.

Many are forced to give up life projects, such as starting a family or moving to other regions, due to salaries that do not allow them to cope with the ever-increasing cost of living.

With rampant inflation and ever-decreasing purchasing power, many nurses find themselves trapped in a vicious circle of debt, forced to resort to loans and financing to make it to the end of the month. It is unacceptable that those who take care of our health are forced to live in these conditions. A deaf politics and an ineffective union, which is nothing more than a pale shadow of the real unions of the 60s.

Italy must do more:

• Align salaries to the European average: It is essential that Italian nurses receive adequate pay for their role and responsibilities.

• Enhance the profession: Nurses are highly qualified professionals and perform a fundamental job for society. It is necessary to recognize their value and invest in their training.

• Improve working conditions: Reducing workload, ensuring more humane shifts, and investing in workplace safety are essential measures to improve the quality of life for nurses.

We can no longer wait:

The time has come to say enough. Italian nurses deserve respect and dignity. Let us unite our voices and make our strength heard by converging into a single union, Nursing Up. We ask the government and institutions to intervene immediately to resolve this emergency.
