Fill out the survey now: do you agree with Bertolaso or would you like his resignation? The news of Dr. Guido Bertolaso's trip, Welfare Councillor of the Lombardy Region, to Argentina and Paraguay for a nurse recruitment agreement for all of Italy has sparked a heated debate among healthcare professionals. In Italy, many experienced nurses choose to emigrate to countries like Switzerland and Luxembourg, where their profession is more valued. In these countries, net salaries exceed 70,000 euros per year in Switzerland and 90,000 in Luxembourg, with benefits that in Italy are just a mirage. The words of Vincenzo Parisi Vincenzo Parisi, Nursing Up Emilia Romagna union leader, harshly criticizes Bertolaso's decision, calling it a humiliation for Italian nurses and a missed opportunity to enhance the profession in our country. In the deafening silence of the other unions, and the indifference of the entire political class, Parisi invites all colleagues to join Nursing Up to have a stronger voice and to defend their rights. An unacceptable paradox The average annual salary of a nurse in Switzerland in 2020 was 81,600 Swiss francs (about 75,000 euros), with a monthly average of 6,800 francs (about 6,250 euros net). In Italy, on the other hand, the average annual salary is around 25,000 euros net. It is true that life in Switzerland is more expensive, but Italy is also the most taxed country in the world. And how many Swiss nurses are looking for work in Italy? In addition to stigmatizing Bertolaso's decision, Parisi proposes an alternative: make the nursing profession more attractive in Italy, with pay in line with the OECD average, outside the sector. Instead of looking for cheap labor in poorer countries, it is necessary to invest in enhancing Italian nurses. Parisi invites all nurses, but also other professionals, to join forces, to join Nursing Up or to organize themselves independently to make their voices heard. There is already a Facebook group with over 20,400 nurses, "Nurses outside the sector", where they are trying to organize protests, peaceful demonstrations. It is time to have a strong and united voice to defend your rights and for a better future for the nursing profession in Italy. To date, the only hope to save the NHS is Nursing Up, but our support is vital, en masse.
