An important victory for all workers, but for healthcare professionals it still seems far away. A toxic environment for 92% of nurses: a survey by www.lapaginadinursingup.it reveals a disheartening reality. Most nurses work in a toxic or somewhat toxic environment, only 8% report that their work environment is healthy. Stress, burnout and emotional detachment: the consequences of a toxic work environment are devastating for the mental and physical health of healthcare professionals. Prolonged stress can lead to exhaustion, depression, anxiety and even emotional detachment from patients. Why don't nurses take to the streets? Perhaps their sense of responsibility and dedication to their work drives them to endure unacceptable conditions. But the price to pay is high: their health and well-being. The Cassation shows the way: ruling no. 2084 of January 2024 offers workers a new tool to protect their rights. Behaviors that harm the worker's moral personality are enough to claim compensation. Examples of work-related stress situations: Workloads, risks and responsibilities linked to the rush to finish, due to staff shortages, disorganization or excessive demands One-way communication, from the manager to the professional (who should be autonomous) Persistence of hostile, heavy, pressing, sometimes persecutory working conditions What to do? Report work-related stress situations: it is important to bring the problem to light to achieve change. Join a union or professional association: to have support and legal protection. Seek psychological support: to deal with the consequences of work-related stress. The health and well-being of healthcare professionals are the key to an efficient and safe healthcare system. Historic ruling by the Court of Cassation: the employer is responsible not only for mobbing, but also for any work-related stress situation that may harm the psycho-physical health of employees.
