Dr. Vanessa Di Censo
Dear Sirs, I am writing these few lines because I am convinced that good news deserves to have “the right to be reported.” Today, the media does nothing but tell us stories of poor healthcare, related to medical and healthcare errors, to inefficiencies or structural deficiencies. Positive stories, of “good healthcare,” on the other hand, rarely make it into the newspapers, they are not news, but in a historical period like the one we are living in, where hospital stays are experienced by patients in complete solitude, for reasons now known to all, the HUMANITY, FRIENDLINESS together with the PROFESSIONALISM demonstrated by all the NURSING and OSS STAFF of the department in question, I believe should emerge or at least be recognized.
As a patient and Doctor of Psychology, I have been able to see how and how much the attitude of the Nursing and OSS staff can make a difference to the psychophysical response of patients. During my stay in the Urology Department, I never encountered neglect, detachment, or misunderstanding. As subjective as the approach with patients may be, and as much as the “human factor” cannot be taught within protocols and guidelines, I would like to emphasize how open and available communication with the aforementioned staff was valuable and helpful in lessening the condition of isolation to which all patients are subject.
“Good healthcare” is not only linked to professional skills and cutting-edge tools, but also to the humanity of the staff, to the certainty for the patient of being listened to, encouraged, and followed before and after the operation. Sometimes it is precisely elements such as care, kindness, patience, sensitivity, attention, which are difficult to measure, that make the difference between two equally excellent hospital structures or departments.
For all the above and with a request for transmission, a heartfelt THANK YOU to the Coordinator Dr. Vanessa Di Censo, to all the Nursing Staff and the OSS Staff belonging to the Urology Department of S. Eugenio.
With your authorization, I would like to inform public opinion that a public healthcare system of great humanity and excellent professionalism does exist.
Sincerely
Gloria Gallotti
