The causes of this decline are many. The fragmentation of the system into 21 different regional models has led to a lack of uniformity in services and inequality in access to care. Added to this is an inefficient management of resources, with waste and cuts that have penalized essential services and sector workers. And yet, it was not always like this. In the past, when the NHS was centralized, Italy boasted one of the best health systems in the world. Greater equity, efficiency, consistency, and planning capacity were the cornerstones of a system that guaranteed quality care to all citizens. Regionalization, on the other hand, has proven to be a failure. The "regions of excellence" are nothing more than a façade that hides the reality of a system that is leaking everywhere. A system that favors seats and waste at the expense of patients and workers. It's time to say enough to this drift. A radical change of course is needed, with a return to a centralized system capable of guaranteeing equity, efficiency, and quality of care to all citizens. It won't be easy, but there is no more time for delays. The future of our health is at stake. Let's stop this havoc! It's never too late to save our NHS.
The alarm is now clear: the Italian national health system is in deep crisis. The data speaks for itself: in 2022, as many as 12 regions did not guarantee the essential levels of care (LEA), compared to 7 in 2021. More than half the country, therefore, finds itself in a situation of severe shortage of health services.
