Italy is sadly recognized as one of the nations that wastes the most public money. 

We nostalgically remember the centralized National Health System, once our flagship and envied worldwide, today unfortunately on the verge of collapse. An NHS that, back then, had a lot of operational staff and few managers. Today, instead, we are witnessing a regional failure: only the number of managers has increased, along with their bureaucracy and salaries inflated by productivity bonuses. Bonuses and salaries unimaginable for a healthcare worker who works hard every day. 

In this context, the introduction of a new professional figure, the nurse assistant, with skills already covered, represents a further waste of public resources. While nurses, midwives, and social-health workers sacrifice themselves daily, facing unsustainable workloads and inadequate salaries, politics seems more interested in creating new bureaucracies than in strengthening existing staff.

It is unacceptable that, in a situation of severe shortage of healthcare personnel, investments continue to be made in useless projects and new superfluous professional figures are created. This choice not only does not solve the problems of our healthcare system, but worsens them, exposing citizens to greater risks and generating confusion in roles and responsibilities.

The solution is simple and clear: increase the number of nurses, OSS and OSSS, figures already highly trained, competent and experienced.

Where to find the resources? It would be enough to recover the enormous funds wasted on useless works, in the inefficiencies of politics and management, in corruption, in organized crime, in wars and even in the PNRR. There are multinationals and big entrepreneurs who, despite earning millions in Italy, pay less taxes than a public employee.

We strongly ask politics to:

• Increase the number of nurses, midwives and social-health workers

• Enhance healthcare professions, increasing salaries, improving working conditions and recognizing the fundamental role of these professionals

• Stop creating new useless professional figures that increase bureaucracy and waste economic resources

• Recognize the exhausting profession for nurses and midwives

• Introduce an exclusivity allowance, as is the case for doctors

• Make staff mobility more flexible

• Provide financial support for off-site students

• Introduce a single national contract for all healthcare professions

We are concerned by the rumors of nurses and OSS ready to resign en masse and to organize themselves to protest and take to the streets. Such an escalation could also involve professionals from other sectors, such as teachers and transport workers.

We urge politicians not to underestimate the intelligence and dedication of these professionals, who until today have endured the impossible for the love of their profession and the citizen. However, tension is rising and it will not be possible to contain it for much longer.

Nurses, midwives, OSS and OSSS say NO to yet another waste of public money. We ask that these resources be used to increase salaries and make the professions that today keep our healthcare system standing attractive.

We ask politicians to listen to our voice and take urgent action to save the National Health System.
