An international team of researchers, led by scientists from the BIRD project and the Max Planck Institute, has made a groundbreaking advance in the field of medical diagnostics. Thanks to a technique based on infrared spectroscopy, it is now possible to analyze the molecular composition of a simple drop of blood, obtaining a unique and highly informative fingerprint of an individual's health. The study, published in the prestigious journal Cell Reports Medicine, demonstrated how the infrared spectrometer can reveal unexpected details about our health by analyzing the molecular composition of blood plasma. This technique is able to precisely identify a wide range of pathological conditions, including: Abnormal lipid levels: An important indicator of cardiovascular diseases. Blood pressure: Allowing for monitoring of hypertension, a risk factor for many diseases. Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes: Revealing alterations in glucose metabolism. A future of personalized diagnoses thanks to an algorithm developed by the researchers, capable of distinguishing with high accuracy between healthy and sick individuals, even in the presence of multiple pathologies. This technology promises to transform the way we approach disease diagnosis: Rapid and non-invasive screening: A simple blood sample could replace a series of traditional tests, allowing for earlier and more precise diagnosis. Continuous health monitoring: Thanks to this technique, it will be possible to monitor an individual's health status over time, identifying any changes and intervening promptly.
