The introduction of a new professional figure in the healthcare sector, presented as a solution to the staff shortage, has sparked strong criticism from sector representatives, nurses, midwives, and OSS.
The critical issues:
The new figure seems like a mix of randomly chosen skills and absolutely cannot replace the specific skills of nurses and midwives, professional figures that are irreplaceable for patient care.
The political decision highlights a serious lack of understanding of hospital dynamics and the real needs of healthcare staff. Instead of creating new figures, resources should be invested to make the nursing profession more attractive, countering the brain drain abroad and the aging workforce.
Our working conditions are unacceptable: low salaries, grueling shifts, and staff shortages expose nurses to health and safety risks, as well as severe psychological stress. The new figure will not solve the problems.
The introduction of the new figure is not supported by scientific evidence demonstrating its effectiveness and usefulness. On the contrary, it undermines current international scientific evidence which states that the nurse should not be replaced by any figure, not even by the doctor; otherwise, an increase in hospital infections, antibiotic resistance, and avoidable deaths has been observed. In the absence of OSS, it could be considered, but we already have experienced and trained support staff.
The creation of a new professional order would then entail further unnecessary costs for the training and management of the category. Entrusting complex tasks to inexperienced personnel with generic skills represents a real risk to the health and safety of patients.
They can't find a few billion to increase salaries but they find about 40 billion for a new figure.
The value of nurses, midwives, and OSS must be recognized. It is necessary to enhance and make these activities attractive through salary adjustments and better work organization. Make the nursing profession economically attractive, as is done in advanced countries, Switzerland, Luxembourg, etc. Hiring will come on its own.
An open and constructive dialogue with healthcare staff representatives is hoped for, to identify concrete and shared solutions to the problems of the healthcare system.
The introduction of a new professional figure in healthcare is an ineffective and dangerous solution. Instead of experimenting with palliatives, it is necessary to invest in nursing staff, enhancing their role and guaranteeing them dignified and safe working conditions.
The health of citizens cannot be put at risk by short-sighted choices lacking scientific basis.
I hope that my colleagues: nurses, midwives, OSS, realize that our situation is due to the absence of a strong union?
