In recent years, Italian nurses have often expressed, with little success, their discontent and demands through protests and strikes. These demonstrations are generally due to a series of reasons including:
- Working Conditions, too often heavy due to staff shortages. This increases stress and burnout among healthcare professionals.
- Salary, EMBARRASSING, 96.2% of nurses who participated in a survey conducted by Nursing Up Emilia Romagna consider it disproportionate not only to the cost of living but above all disproportionate to the risks, responsibilities, and workloads. An Italian nurse earns on average about 1,600 euros, a full one thousand euros less compared to the OECD average. A disgrace that not only humiliates the profession, but pushes many to seek their fortune abroad.
- Professional Recognition, zero recognition, economic progressions at a trickle, ridiculous contract renewals, we are often the scapegoat for everyone.
A healthcare system at the breaking point, demotivated professionals and citizens at risk, because they are the ones who will pay the price, the citizens.
Italy is facing an unprecedented crisis in the healthcare sector, with nurses representing the most affected category. There are over 100,000 nurses missing, 8,400 midwives, thousands of OSS, figures that will double in a few years, and the consequences are already tangible: very long waiting lists, lack of assistance and an exponential increase in complaints about malpractice.
Fossc Scientific Societies: in 10 years, between 2011-2021, 125 hospitals were closed in Italy, a full 12%. Italian nurses can no longer make it to the end of the month and politics offers only useless palliatives.
What does politics intend to do to prevent the exodus of nurses? Creating new professional figures, new master's degrees, increasing responsibilities and annual training are proposals that border on the comical.
If you want to attract and retain nurses, you have to pay them adequately, as the leading countries in Europe do, who are actively seeking nurses trained in Italy. Meanwhile, our politicians are looking for nurses in India, with questionable training.
Nurses want few things, which are the same things Nursing Up has been asking for years, but representative strength is needed to impose them:
Trade union unity is also needed, dear colleagues, giving 51% to a single union would strengthen the bargaining power of nurses beyond belief. I say Nursing Up, the fastest way at the moment.
