An experiment is underway for an algorithm to determine the need for healthcare personnel. The algorithm promises to overcome rigid predefined parameters, adapting to the specific needs of each department and hospital. An undeniable advantage in terms of flexibility. A palliative that does not solve the structural issues. W hat is the use of an algorithm, when the most prestigious international evidence says that the nurse-patient ratio should be one to five? While in sub-intensive care it is 1 to 2 and in intensive care 1 to 1? The shortage of nursing staff has its roots in deep-seated problems, such as low pay, often burdensome working conditions, and lack of protections. An algorithm cannot and must not replace targeted structural interventions to make the profession more attractive and to enhance the work of those who carry it out with dedication. We will closely monitor the evolution of the experiment, carefully evaluating its concrete effects on the efficiency of the healthcare system and on the working conditions of the staff. It cannot be accepted that it becomes a pretext to justify staff cuts or to relieve politics of its own shortcomings. Concrete commitment is needed to improve nurses' working conditions, increase salaries, and invest in training. Only in this way can an efficient, sustainable healthcare system be created, and above all, one that respects the professionals who bring it to life. The real challenge is to build a system that values the work of nurses and guarantees citizens quality care.
